St. René Goupil and St. Jean de la Lande, were laymen and the other six were Jesuit priests: Saint Isaac Jogues, Saint Antoine Daniel, Saint Jean de Brébeuf, Saint Gabriel Lalemant, Saint Charles Garnier, and Saint Noël Chabanel, missionaries from New France who boldly spread the Gospel in Canada.
An argument arose among the disciples about which of them was the greatest. Jesus realized the intention of their hearts and took a child and placed it by his side and said to them, "Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me. For the one who is least among all of you is the one who is the greatest." Then John said in reply, "Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow in our company." Jesus said to him, "Do not prevent him, for whoever is not against you is for you" (Luke 9: 46-50).
This is challenging. We all want to be recognized, we all want credit, we all want to be praised. This is natural but if we are too attached to it and we want it too much it can become the center of our lives. We need to sincerely ask ourselves, “Am I really doing this for God or for myself?” If we are really doing it to serve God then we should be at peace if we don’t get recognized at times.
Blessed Mother, strengthen me interiorly so I may be humble.
