March 26 - St. Margaret of Clitherow
Those who had arrested Jesus led him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled. Peter was following him at a distance as far as the high priest's courtyard, and going inside he sat down with the servants to see the outcome. The chief priests and the entire Sanhedrin kept trying to obtain false testimony against Jesus in order to put him to death, but they found none, though many false witnesses came forward (Matthew 26: 57-60).
When we are weak we follow Jesus at a distance, like St. Peter did that night. We are afraid of what others will say or maybe we just don’t feel like standing up for our faith in Jesus. The Church exists today because many men and women of virtue have loved Christ more than their fears.
Jesus, please give me the courage and the humility to follow you closely.
